October 1, 2010: Special Awesome Pretties Edition, Because Sher Bailey Is!

Sherri Bailey, Sher, calls herself a humor writer and that is just as well because that is a precise description of someone who does what she does. Sher writes pieces that are fearlessly original and totally relentless in their ability to make her readers laugh. Yes, there is also the other stuff. You know. The sad stuff and the grocery lists. But mostly there is the funny stuff and Sher lays it down brilliantly in her highly popular personal blog, Wiping the Crazy Off My Face.

Although Sher grew up in North Carolina, a series of unfortunate events involving a number of ex-husbands, has permitted her to live many, many places, making her an expert on everywhere, and possibly, everything. Kay values such expertise and is plotting to use it to her advantage. In fact, the two women are both hoping to leverage their time and yours by trading all sorts of useful information. Sher has agreed to explain to Kay how to get a man to propose to her in Sears. And Kay promises to teach Sher how to overcome the terror of cutting her own bangs.

This special Awesome Pretties Edition of Women Are Not Funny is dedicated to Sher and the darling members of the Awesome Pretties, current and future. We simply love you, because, well, because you are.

The spotlight musician is Women Are Not Funny’s very own Paula Kelley and the Paula Kelley Orchestra sing I’d Fall in Love with Anyone.

September 24, 2010: Is She the Reason God Made Oklahoma?

Joy Sharp-Franklin calls herself an opinionated woman. Who even knew there was such a thing? She is the creator of Expedition Oklahoma which documents her personal photographic journey through the great state of Oklahoma, exploring the communities, State Parks, National Parks and historic sites. Another way to say it is that she photographs antique tractor shows. As Joy explains it, she decided to see as much Oklahoma as she could—because Oklahoma is there and she is in Oklahoma. Not only that, she is a woman with a camera and a distinctive point of view.

Joy used to be a teacher stuck in a “back stabby” work environment. Now she is stuck in a “back stabby” home environment, given she is the mother of a teenager daughter. Joy says that she has found the transition from working mom to stay at home mom to be very strange. Kay will ask her about that and about her concerns regarding childhood consumerism. Apparently Joy has actually declared war on Leggos. And not meaning to threaten listeners, Kay will also ask Joy about Oklahoma and whether there is really a good reason for it to exist.

Joy loves concerts and is a huge fan of Fiction Plane and that is why they are the featured group for this show. Currently touring in Europe, they are quite posh and a fabulous listen! We will be playing their latest single, Out of My Face.

September 17, 2010: Knit One, Purl One, Blog One

Laurie Foley is the mother of a yo-yoist. She is also a woman with answers, and that is a good thing, because here, in this place and this space, we are lousy with questions—about everything. When Kay Ballard told her she planned to ask her The World’s Two Hundred Dumbest Questions, Laurie’s heart didn’t even skip a beat. Is it because she is naturally unflappable? Or is it because the sheepskin in Laurie’s pocket is actually a PhD?

Laurie’s post-doc is in knitting, blogging, coaching, and personal branding: the theme is having the self-knowledge that leads to an authentic voice. She wants to save people from wearing someone else’s outfit! She wants to prevent the sad reality of abandoned orphan blogs. And fortunately she wants to dish with Kay on Women Are Not Funny.

The show’s spotlighted indie band is the fabulous C.A.I.S.O. Steeldrum Band and they will be pouring the Red, Red Wine.

September 10, 2010: Shanna Trenholm, Minimalist Muse

Shanna Trenholm has a different take on fashion.  The highly fashionable woman, who brands herself as a writer, muse, catalyst, is convinced that when it comes to fashion, less is decidedly more.  Not only for the sustainability of the planet named Earth but for the ease and simplicity and elegance that a minimal aesthetic can bring to an Awesome Pretty life.  Will Shanna be able to convince Kay Ballard?  The fashion conversation continues, but in a somewhat surprising way.

Our featured guest has actual bona fides for living the high life in a teeny tiny manner.  Shanna drives a Smart Car and was mentioned by Forbes as the only female moderator at the national smart car forum.  She loves small houses in both theory and practice.  And her newly launched $100 Wardrobe Challenge is a call to all to downsize puffy existing wardrobes and to acquire new clothes with mindfulness. Shanna knows that Kay, a wretched golfer, owns ten pairs of designer golf shoes. Will Kay be deservedly lectured for embracing “extraneous trappings?” Listen-in to find out!

September 3, 2010: You’ll Love the Cool Even More

Who doesn’t love the cool?  Other than your great aunt, and perhaps your former high school principal?  Well today’s featured guest not only loves the cool, she lives it.  Michelle McCormack is a forward thinking digital strategist, who brings her passion for technology, science, fashion, Hollywood and hip-hop to the diverse clients of her own Boston based company, LoveTheCool.

Michelle’s company is truly her own invention and a daily demonstration of cool. Her work for her clients is informed by her wide ranging international experience as a brand manager for a prestigious pr firm and as a photographer and stylist for many of the upscale magazines that we love, Including Vanity Fair, Town and Country and Vogue.

Which is cool for us, because summer is over!  And one way we know that is that Vogue has published its famous September issue.  So Michelle and Kay will take a look inside Vogue and talk about fall fashion and falling for fashion and which fall fashions should take a fall.  And we’ll listen to an especially cool hip hop mix, 4am (Tell Me Why) by one of Michelle’s totally cool clients, J.VILL, an emerging indie record producer.

Check out Kay Ballard’s personal fashion show! Funny proof that she loves to Vogue!
